Openers that get diagnosed against the door, not sold on their own

Chapter 01
We check the door before we talk motors
A door that binds in its track, drags on worn rollers, or has gone out of balance will burn out a brand new opener the exact same way it wore out the old one. Before anything gets quoted, we look at how the door itself is moving.
The balance test tells us fast. With the opener disconnected, a properly balanced door will hold still around waist height when you lift it partway and let go. If it drops on its own or shoots back up, that is a spring or track problem, not an opener problem, and no motor fixes it.
Selling someone an opener onto a door that is not balanced is how you end up back at that house in six months for a second failure. We would rather tell you the truth on the first visit.

Picking an opener that actually suits the garage
Chain, belt and wall-mount drives all do the same job differently. A belt drive runs quieter, which matters when there is a bedroom sitting above the garage. A wall-mount unit clears the ceiling track entirely, which helps when headroom is tight or you want the ceiling for storage.
Battery backup is worth asking about here in West Fargo. A winter power outage that traps a car inside, or a homeowner outside in the cold, is a real inconvenience a backup battery solves.

Safety reversal and the photo eyes
Every opener has two small sensors mounted near the floor on each side of the track, aimed at each other. When they are out of alignment, the door usually starts down and reverses partway, or the opener's lights blink instead of running normally.
We test the reversal on every service call: an object placed in the door's path should stop and reverse the door immediately. It is a quick check, and it is not optional given what a garage door weighs.
When a repair beats a replacement
A worn logic board, a stripped gear set, a broken trolley or a travel limit that has drifted out can often be repaired rather than replaced outright, and that is usually the cheaper, faster fix.
Age, whether parts are still available, and how the door itself is holding up all factor into that call. We will tell you plainly which situation you are looking at instead of steering you toward a new unit by default.
