Your garage door spring just broke. Here is what to do next.

A garage door spring does not fail quietly. Most homeowners in West Fargo who call us about a broken spring describe the same thing: a loud bang from the garage, sometimes loud enough to hear from bed, and then a door that will not open the way it did the day before. If that happened to you overnight, you are not imagining it and you are not the only one it happens to.

How to tell it is the spring

Walk out to the garage and look up. Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the door, usually behind a metal tube that runs the width of the opening. A broken spring usually shows a visible gap in the coil, a clean split where the metal has separated under tension. You may also notice the door looks like it is sagging slightly to one side, or that it will not stay up on its own when you lift it by hand.

Why the door suddenly feels so heavy

A standard garage door weighs more than most people expect, often over a hundred pounds for a two car opening. The spring system is what carries that weight, not the opener. The opener motor is built to nudge a balanced door up and down, not to lift dead weight on its own. Once the spring breaks, the full weight of the door transfers straight onto the opener's drive gear and the track hardware. That is why the door either will not budge or opens a few inches and stops.

Do not keep pressing the button

This is the part we see go wrong the most. The opener does not know the spring broke, so pressing the button again and again will not fix anything and can strip the gear inside the motor unit or bend the track. If the door is down, leave it down. If it is stuck partway open, do not force it the rest of the way by hand either, since an unsupported door can drop fast once the last bit of spring tension lets go.

Why this is not a weekend project

Torsion springs are wound under a huge amount of stored tension, enough that a slip while winding or unwinding one can cause a serious injury. The winding bars, the cable drums, the shaft, all of it has to be handled in a specific order with the right tools. We would rather you call us than watch a video and give it a try, because the margin for error is genuinely small.

If you have two springs and only one broke

Many garage doors, especially wider two car openings, run on two torsion springs rather than one. If only one has broken, the door may still move a little under power, which can trick people into thinking it is fine to keep using until they get around to a repair. It is not. The surviving spring is now carrying a load it was never sized for on its own, and running the door this way is one of the fastest ways to turn a single spring replacement into a full spring set plus additional hardware damage.
